On Oct. 17 the Okanagan Rhythm Festival made it’s first debut in Kelowna at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. If the energy in the air was any measurement, the 0RF’09 was a great success.
Smiles and rhythms filled the RCA all day long. There were workshops throughout the day in traditional world drum and dance incorporating drumming in health, education and wellness. An ongoing drum circle through the day allowed everyone to participate. Vendor booths selling world percussion instruments, clothing and costumes provided a market/fair experience.
The electric energy of the day exploded with renewed vigor for the evening performance in the Mary Irwin Theatre. Performances included, Japanese Taiko drumming, Garifuna drumming from Belize, Traditional West African Drum and Dance and Middle Eastern music and dance. The audience participated throughout the evening with clapping, singing, and joining in a full drum circle with the performers before the intermission. The night ended with a final number showcasing all the performers while giving thanks to all who attended and supported ORF’09.
ORF’09 was organized by teachers, facilitators, and performers in the Okanagan drumming community. This was truly a festival created by and for the Okanagan community. If you missed this one, the Okanagan Rhythm Festival will be back next year…..
